SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains Lecture Series: Forensic Meteorology
DESCRIPTION:Meteorology and the Law: The History and Science of Forensic Meteorology\nAlicia Wasula\, Ph.D.\, Certified Consulting Meteorologist\, President\, STM Weather  \nWhile most people think of meteorologists as scientists who spend their time looking forward into the future to make a forecast\, forensic meteorologists spend their time looking backward at weather events that have already occurred. Many types of litigation involve the weather in some way: personal injury\, property damage claims\, wrongful death\, and even criminal cases. Forensic meteorologists are retained by attorneys as ‘expert witnesses’ to explain to them and to the court what the weather conditions were like relating to a particular incident. Sometimes\, expert meteorologists must give opinions as to how the weather conditions played a role in the particular event involved in the lawsuit. Observational data from many sources\, including CoCoRaHS observers\, is synthesized into a chronology of weather events. Although many cases settle outside of court\, forensic meteorologists are at times required to appear in court to discuss their research and explain their opinion to a judge or a jury. Many forensic meteorologists hold the AMS Certified Consulting Meteorologist certification\, which attests to their knowledge\, ethics and experience. In addition to conducting scientific analysis\, forensic meteorologists must be excellent communicators who are able to explain their findings clearly to non-scientists. \nIn this webinar\, we will discuss the long history of the field of forensic meteorology\, learn how observational data is used to understand the meteorological conditions\, and look at several interesting examples which demonstrate how forensic meteorologists help attorneys understand the weather as it relates to a specific case. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Presentation and Book Signing with Author Ty Gagne
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: EVENT IS SOLD OUT. \nTy Gagne\, author of the new book The Lions of Winter: Survival and Sacrifice on Mount Washington\, will give a presentation on Saturday\, February 8 from 4:30 to 5:30 PM inside MEDITECH’s auditorium (7 Blue Hill River Rd\, Canton\, MA 02021). Learn about Gagne’s unique process of research and storytelling\, as well as the weather and climate science shaping our understanding of avalanches in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A brief overview connecting avalanches with the increasing frequency of rain-on-snow will be followed by Gagne’s presentation\, Q&A\, and book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. This event is FREE and open to the public. Donations will benefit co-hosts Mount Washington Observatory and Blue Hill Observatory\, both nonprofit organizations. \nAbout The Lions of Winter\nOn January 25\, 1982\, Mountain Rescue Service volunteer Albert Dow became the first – and so far the only – member of a backcountry search and rescue team to be killed in the line of duty in the White Mountains. This happened during a four-day search for two missing ice climbers on Mount Washington. Dow was caught in an avalanche in terrain previously thought to present no risk. His teammate\, Michael Hartrich\, was injured in the accident. Gagne relies on Mount Washington Observatory weather data in part to tell the story. \nThe Lions of Winter describes the ordeal of the missing climbers\, the selflessness and courage of the dedicated rescuers\, the tragic circumstances surrounding the avalanche\, and the heartbreak of the family\, friends\, and teammates of the fallen rescuer. Gagne also chronicles how this grueling event became a landmark of White Mountain history\, ushering in a new era in the search and rescue community of New Hampshire

SUMMARY:2024 Eastern Snow & Avalanche Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2024 Eastern Snow & Avalanche Workshop! ESAW is a continuing education seminar for avalanche professionals and backcountry enthusiasts.\n\nMWOBS Weather Observer and Research/IT Specialist Charlie Peachey will be presenting on rain-on-snow research alongside Laura Wilson\, who spent last winter working as an intern with both the Mount Washington Avalanche Center (MWAC) and MWOBS\, contributing to Charlie’s valuable research during her dual internship.\n\nA rainstorm in the winter can quickly destabilize snowpack over a large area\, negatively impact local ski areas and economies\, and ruin a backcountry enthusiast’s weekend plans. Therefore\, our goal is to evaluate when these events are most likely to occur and how big they are when they occur by utilizing Mount Washington Observatories’ unique and invaluable long-term climate data set. Our initial results have begun to show how rain-on-snow events are becoming more prevalent later into the year and have increased in the number of occurrences per year over the past 10 years than ever before. A perfect example of the impacts of rain on snow events comes from the significant event that occurred last December 18-19\, 2023. Upon analyzing nearby stream gauge data\, it was determined that this event caused a nearly once in an eight-hundred-year flood for some nearby streams. Therefore\, it validates the need to understand these weather events better and their impacts on nearby communities.\n\nPlease visit https://esaw.org/ for more information and to purchase tickets to this event.

SUMMARY:Mount Washington Observatory Founding Day
DESCRIPTION:*Event Update: Due to inclement weather expected on the summit of Mount Washington\, we have decided to move our Oct. 15 Founding Day open house to the Observatory’s Administrative Building\, located at 2779 White Mountain Highway in North Conway\, NH. \nTours of our summit weather station will not be offered on Oct. 15. We have made this decision in the interest of safety for our guests\, staff\, and volunteers. Thank you for understanding! \nWe invite you to stop by our office in North Conway on Tuesday\, Oct. 15 for the open house from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM\, and to enjoy a presentation at 1:00 PM by Dr. Peter Crane\, Observatory Curator. The Observatory’s Gladys Brooks Memorial Library will be open from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. \nLight refreshments will be provided. Please enter through the front of our building. \n  \nOn October 15\, 1932\, Bob Monahan\, Sal Pagliuca\, Alex MacKenzie\, and Joe Dodge set up a permanent presence on the summit. Using funds obtained from a research grant and a few private donors\, the Mount Washington Observatory was formally established\, with a mission of advancing the understanding of weather\, climate\, and the mountain itself. \nJust two years later\, on April 12\, 1934\, the Observatory captured what was then the fastest surface wind speed ever observed by man\, at 231 mph. This thrust Mount Washington into the spotlight and highlighted the value in having a mountaintop weather station. \nDue to their steadfast dedication and the Observatory staff that followed\, this mountaintop weather station remains a unique operation staffed 365 days a year and proudly maintains one of the longest running climate records in North America. Today\, we continue to gather\, disseminate and analyze daily weather data; to contribute to the critical\, long-term weather and climate record essential to scientific understanding of weather and climate in a unique\, extreme environment. Here’s to approaching our 92nd anniversary\, and many more to come! \n\nWhile we at the Observatory are extremely proud to celebrate our history\, it is only a fraction of what makes the day so special. None of it would have been possible without the support of our members! Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in making the Observatory what it is today\, we genuinely couldn’t do it without you! \nFood and refreshments made possible by our generous sponsors at Cabot Creamery Cooperative.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Storm Chasing- It’s Rocket Science!
DESCRIPTION:Reed Timmer\, Ph.D.\, Extreme Meteorologist  \nTornadoes are one of the most destructive natural forces on Earth\, yet there is still much to learn about this dynamic\, hard-to-predict phenomena. Join renowned storm chaser and extreme meteorologist Reed Timmer to learn about the Team Dominator project\, launching miniaturized\, pseudo-Lagrangian sensors into tornadoes. Tornado strength and behavior are determined by gradients in thermodynamics within the tornado\, supercell\, and surrounding environment. Tim’s mission is to measure this data inside of the tornado and parent mesocyclone using parachuted probes launched from the top of Dominator 3. In this presentation\, Tim will share the data collected using the Dominators\, ground-based probes\, and our rocket launches in tornadoes. Never stop chasing.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Extreme Weather On Social Media
DESCRIPTION:January 16th at 7pm\, 2024: Extreme Weather On Social Media\nRenée Sieber\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor\, McGill University \nCrisis managers aim to prevent injuries and fatalities during extreme weather events by issuing official alerts across a variety of platforms including social media. Yet few ever study how well these alerts actually aid the public or promote safety. McGill University Associate Professor Renée Sieber will discuss her project\, funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada\, that uses machine learning (Natural Language Processing or NLP) to analyze social media data and determine how best to improve the situational awareness of individuals and officials during damaging extreme weather events in Northern climates.
