SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Eyes on the Sky: Watching the Weather with Mountain Rain or Snow
DESCRIPTION:Meghan Collins\, MS\, Associate Research Scientist\, Desert Research Institute   \nWhat is falling from the sky right now? Join us to hear about Mountain Rain or Snow\, a project welcoming weather observers to help track cold weather storms.   \nIt’s notoriously difficult to track winter precipitation in the mountains because it can vary over the course of minutes and across short distances. Normally\, we think of snow falling at air temperatures below 32°F – but in the world of weather forecasting\, that isn’t always the case. We can sometimes see snow falling at several degrees above freezing! And as residents of the northeast know\, it can also be difficult to predict freezing rain. Direct observations\, made by people\, are the most accurate way to update the technologies that drive our weather forecasts.  \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Tuckerman Inferno Pentathlon
DESCRIPTION:Compete to support a great cause! All proceeds from this event support the Mount Washington Avalanche Center Foundation. This event is a major fundraiser for the foundation whose mission is to support the Mount Washington Avalanche Center by enhancing and expanding avalanche education opportunities\, advocating for responsible and sustainable backcountry recreation in New Hampshire’s unique alpine ecosystems\, and expanding the reach of US Forest Service avalanche forecasts and messages. \nThis year’s pentathlon harkens back to the Inferno’s historical roots as a summit-to-valley citizen’s ski race while retaining the modern Inferno’s five-stage adventure relay format. Compete individually\, as a skimo/nordic dynamic duo\, or as a relay team. \nThe new Inferno is the comprehensive test piece for winter mountain travel. Racers will ascend the eastern flank of Mount Washington to the Summit (weather permitting) and descend to Jackson Village using alpine touring\, technical ski mountaineering\, alpine ski racing\, backcountry nordic travel\, and nordic ski racing skills. The race retains the pentathlon format with relay tag zones and time splits for the following five stages. Register here!

SUMMARY:Mount Washington Observatory Founding Day
DESCRIPTION:Event Update: Tours of our summit weather station will not be offered on Oct. 15 due to inclement weather. Thank you for understanding! \nOctober 15th is Mount Washington Observatory’s Founding Day! Celebrate our 93rd year by joining us on the summit of Mount Washington and in our North Conway administrative offices: \n\nFree MWOBS weather station tours from 10:00AM to 3:00PM\, located at Mount Washington State Park. (Dependent on weather conditions & Auto Road operations) Auto Road tickets are not provided. You must pay for your own transportation to the summit of Mount Washington.\nGladys Brooks Memorial Library Open House hosted by MWOBS Curator Dr. Peter Crane from 10:00AM to 3:00PM. (Location: Upstairs- MWOBS Administrative Offices\, 2779 White Mountain Highway\, North Conway NH).\n\nOn October 15\, 1932\, Bob Monahan\, Sal Pagliuca\, Alex MacKenzie\, and Joe Dodge set up a permanent presence on the summit. Using funds obtained from a research grant and a few private donors\, the Mount Washington Observatory was formally established\, with a mission of advancing the understanding of weather\, climate\, and the mountain itself. \nJust two years later\, on April 12\, 1934\, the Observatory captured what was then the fastest surface wind speed ever observed by man\, at 231 mph. This thrust Mount Washington into the spotlight and highlighted the value in having a mountaintop weather station. \nDue to their steadfast dedication and the Observatory staff that followed\, this mountaintop weather station remains a unique operation staffed 365 days a year and proudly maintains one of the longest running climate records in North America. Today\, we continue to gather\, disseminate and analyze daily weather data; to contribute to the critical\, long-term weather and climate record essential to scientific understanding of weather and climate in a unique\, extreme environment. Here’s to our 93rd anniversary\, and many more to come! \nWhile we at the Observatory are extremely proud to celebrate our history\, it is only a fraction of what makes the day so special. None of it would have been possible without the support of our members! Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in making the Observatory what it is today\, we genuinely couldn’t do it without you!
