SUMMARY:Mount Washington Observatory Founding Day
DESCRIPTION:*Event Update: Due to inclement weather expected on the summit of Mount Washington\, we have decided to move our Oct. 15 Founding Day open house to the Observatory’s Administrative Building\, located at 2779 White Mountain Highway in North Conway\, NH. \nTours of our summit weather station will not be offered on Oct. 15. We have made this decision in the interest of safety for our guests\, staff\, and volunteers. Thank you for understanding! \nWe invite you to stop by our office in North Conway on Tuesday\, Oct. 15 for the open house from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM\, and to enjoy a presentation at 1:00 PM by Dr. Peter Crane\, Observatory Curator. The Observatory’s Gladys Brooks Memorial Library will be open from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. \nLight refreshments will be provided. Please enter through the front of our building. \n  \nOn October 15\, 1932\, Bob Monahan\, Sal Pagliuca\, Alex MacKenzie\, and Joe Dodge set up a permanent presence on the summit. Using funds obtained from a research grant and a few private donors\, the Mount Washington Observatory was formally established\, with a mission of advancing the understanding of weather\, climate\, and the mountain itself. \nJust two years later\, on April 12\, 1934\, the Observatory captured what was then the fastest surface wind speed ever observed by man\, at 231 mph. This thrust Mount Washington into the spotlight and highlighted the value in having a mountaintop weather station. \nDue to their steadfast dedication and the Observatory staff that followed\, this mountaintop weather station remains a unique operation staffed 365 days a year and proudly maintains one of the longest running climate records in North America. Today\, we continue to gather\, disseminate and analyze daily weather data; to contribute to the critical\, long-term weather and climate record essential to scientific understanding of weather and climate in a unique\, extreme environment. Here’s to approaching our 92nd anniversary\, and many more to come! \n\nWhile we at the Observatory are extremely proud to celebrate our history\, it is only a fraction of what makes the day so special. None of it would have been possible without the support of our members! Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in making the Observatory what it is today\, we genuinely couldn’t do it without you! \nFood and refreshments made possible by our generous sponsors at Cabot Creamery Cooperative.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Forecasting the 2024 Total Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:Shawn Laatsch\, Director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center at the University of Maine\, Orono; Francis Tarasiewicz\, Weather Observer/Education Specialist\, Mount Washington Observatory On April 8th\, 2024\, portions of the United States\, including Northern New England\, will experience a total solar eclipse when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth\, completely blocking the Sun. This will be the only total solar eclipse in the northeastern United States until 2079. Join astronomer Shawn Laastch from the University of Maine and Weather Observer/Education Specialist Francis Tarasiewicz from Mount Washington Observatory to learn about the science of eclipses\, how to safely view them\, and crucially\, what the weather forecast will likely be in your planned viewing location. Come with questions and help share in the excitement of this unforgettable event.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Storm Chasing- It’s Rocket Science!
DESCRIPTION:Reed Timmer\, Ph.D.\, Extreme Meteorologist  \nTornadoes are one of the most destructive natural forces on Earth\, yet there is still much to learn about this dynamic\, hard-to-predict phenomena. Join renowned storm chaser and extreme meteorologist Reed Timmer to learn about the Team Dominator project\, launching miniaturized\, pseudo-Lagrangian sensors into tornadoes. Tornado strength and behavior are determined by gradients in thermodynamics within the tornado\, supercell\, and surrounding environment. Tim’s mission is to measure this data inside of the tornado and parent mesocyclone using parachuted probes launched from the top of Dominator 3. In this presentation\, Tim will share the data collected using the Dominators\, ground-based probes\, and our rocket launches in tornadoes. Never stop chasing.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Projecting Future Trends in Extreme Precipitation over the Northeast US
DESCRIPTION:February 20th at 7pm\, 2024: Projecting Future Trends in Extreme Precipitation over the Northeast US\nRobert Nazarian\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor of Physics\, Special Assistant to the Associate Vice Provost for Research\, Fairfield University  \nThe summer of 2023 reminded us that the Northeast US is no stranger to extreme precipitation and raises the question of how the strongest storms over the region will change in a warming climate. Join us as we explore new research that answers this question and potential impacts\, with particular emphasis on the White Mountain region.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Extreme Weather On Social Media
DESCRIPTION:January 16th at 7pm\, 2024: Extreme Weather On Social Media\nRenée Sieber\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor\, McGill University \nCrisis managers aim to prevent injuries and fatalities during extreme weather events by issuing official alerts across a variety of platforms including social media. Yet few ever study how well these alerts actually aid the public or promote safety. McGill University Associate Professor Renée Sieber will discuss her project\, funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada\, that uses machine learning (Natural Language Processing or NLP) to analyze social media data and determine how best to improve the situational awareness of individuals and officials during damaging extreme weather events in Northern climates.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: The Science of Solar
DESCRIPTION:December 5th at 7pm\, 2023: The Science of Solar \nChris Kelly\, ReVision Energy\, Employee-Owner\, Solar Design Specialist  \nThe Sun may be the primary driver of Earth’s weather and climate\, but it’s also a tremendous source of renewable energy through the science of photovoltaics. Chris Kelly of ReVision Energy will help us understand how photons from the Sun can help power our homes\, businesses\, and cars\, with insights into what environmental variables solar designers take into consideration when evaluating different projects (including the weather!). Join the program if you’re curious about how solar panels work and how electrifying everything can serve as one strategy for combating climate change.

SUMMARY:Science in the Mountains: Health Impacts of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:November 14th at 7pm\, 2023: Health Impacts of Climate Change\nDeborah Gerson\, MD\, and Robert Dewey\, MD  \nClimate change is having a real and increasing impact on human health around the world. In New Hampshire\, we are experiencing increasing vector borne disease\, more days of extreme heat\, air and water quality problems\, and extreme weather events\, among other impacts. Physicians representing the NH Healthcare Workers for Climate Action\, a grassroots\, non-partisan coalition of healthcare workers\, will discuss the basics of climate science\, how climate change impacts health\, climate solutions\, and suggested actions.
