Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Mount Washington Observatory. As a nonprofit, member-supported institution, volunteers are an important part of our operations.

Volunteer opportunities are available at both of our facilities—our weather station on top of Mount Washington, and our administrative offices located at our Weather Discovery Center museum in downtown North Conway, New Hampshire. We also occasionally need volunteers to assist with tasks in the field and at offsite events.

Volunteering at our Summit Weather Station

Our most popular volunteer offering, our summit volunteer program offers an exciting, unique and one-of-a-kind way to experience life at a real, working weather station—for free! Summit volunteers spend a full shift week, from Wednesday to Wednesday, living in our mountaintop weather station, cooking and helping the crew with cleaning and other chores. This adventurous program is open to current Mount Washington Observatory members only. Not a member? Join now.

To learn more about how to become a summit volunteer, please visit the Summit Volunteer page.

Volunteering at our Administrative Offices and Other Locations

Volunteers support our administrative staff in a variety of ways. In the office, volunteers help with mailings and other administrative tasks. Outside, volunteers help us with landscaping and maintaining our remote instrument sites throughout the White Mountains. Volunteers also provide support at local and regional events. If you would like to offer your time and talent, we invite you to complete a Valley Volunteer application.

Thank you for your interest in supporting our work through volunteerism! We look forward to meeting you.
