Happily Employed
2014-12-28 16:28:10.000 – Caleb Meute, Weather Observer / Education Specialist
I have to say that I am pretty ecstatic to have completed my internship and have it TURN INTO A JOB HERE. I’ll try and remain calm for the remainder of this comment.
At the beginning of 2014, I found myself employed in a position where I was not utilizing any sort of meteorology at all. This was a problem for me because I have been passionate about weather since I was a child, and after obtaining my meteorology degree I figured I would have no problem acquiring a job in the field. Two years had elapsed following my graduation, and this was not the case. My friends and family all live in southeastern Pennsylvania, but I decided to take a chance and apply for an internship at the Mount Washington Observatory. I had never been to the summit of Mount Washington, nor had I ever been to New Hampshire, but a hope and a prayer later I found myself driving north to meet the crew at the base of the auto road to begin my summer internship.
Since the beginning of the internship, I can honestly say that this has been the greatest of any experience I have ever had or can even imagine anyone having. I have vastly improved my meteorology knowledge and I have gotten so much experience that I will carry with me for my whole life.
I feel so blessed to have been hired by the Mount Washington Observatory as a weather observer and education specialist. I will now be able to work with schools around the world and have an impact on the minds of our future generation of scientists. I also will continue to improve on my shoveling techniques and figure out the perfect balance of power and precision to rid our instruments of ice. Oh yeah, one more thing I will be doing is observing the weather at the place where it is the worst in the world! While this will only be a temporary job for me, as I am filling in for Mike Carmon, who has temporarily taken over the role of director of summit operations, I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity.
2014 was certainly an epic one for me. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and will have a great New Year’s leading into an awesome 2015. Here’s to many more comments, forecasts, broadcasts, educational programs, snow moving and ice terminating, from this guy.
