When Friends Become Family

There’s hardly ever a dull moment on the summit. If we’re not forecasting, taking hourly observations, providing live interactive programs to students in classrooms, strengthening our IT network, composing weather summaries, shoveling, hosting an overnight trip, or completing so many of the other tasks necessary to maintain a mountaintop weather station, we can usually be found enjoying each other’s company by working on our poker faces, trying to beat the other team in corn hole, catching up on episodes of Modern Family, determining the Boggle champ, talking about summer when it’s winter, talking about winter when it’s summer, laughing uncontrollably at the dinner table (maybe that’s just me!), or making bets about snowfall totals and peak wind gusts. Needless to say, life at the summit is awesome and I’m lucky to be able to say that my shift mates are not just colleagues I work with, but rather, they are great friends that I enjoy spending time with too!

Speaking of making bets, it looks like we will be doing just that in the near future. With a significant rain event tomorrow that will eventually transition to snow on the higher summits, along with a coastal system looking to develop mid-week, it appears we will see high winds and possibly a significant amount of snowfall. While it’s nothing to write home about just yet (as models continue to show disagreement with the timing and position of the coastal storm), it’s certainly on our radar (pun intended!) and we will be monitoring that closely over the next few days.
