Staff, Staff Everywhere!

Yesterday’s Cool Clouds

The sun is shining high in the sky today, shining a proverbial light on all of the changes up here!

For most of the fall and winter months, staff on the summit was fairly minimal: 3 observers, 1 intern, and 1 or 2 volunteers. Sure there were a multitude of guests throughout this time period, but when it came to staff, there were only the 5 or 6 of us (even down to 4 during some weeks!).

However, this has changed drastically with the evolution of the seasons from winter to summer. My shift is now comprised of 3 observers, 2 interns, 2 museum attendants, 2 volunteers, and 1 docent, for a grand total of 10 staff members. The bunk rooms are far more packed, the dinner table is as well, and the range of personalities up here is quite diverse from only one month ago.

We often say, as members of summit staff, that ‘no two work days are ever the same on Mount Washington.’ This certainly has been ringing truer than ever, with the new extreme museum and the new staff, it has kept us all on our toes!

Throughout the next week, you’ll be hearing from the rest of our shift and their thoughts on summit life. You’ll hear a range of perspectives, starting today with myself, a 5-1/2 year veteran of MWO, all the way down to our newest intern, who has been a part of our staff for only 2 days.

I have to say, though, I’m quite lucky to be alongside a group of such talented, hard-working, and dedicated individuals, keenly focused on keeping our mountaintop weather station operating as smooth as ever!
