There’s a white “X” painted somewhere on a structure at the Summit of Mount Washington – The “X” serves two purposes – It started out as the “Official” Point of Observation for the Weather Observers who take a Weather Observation once an hour 24 hours a day 365 days a year. This same “X” has also become a place to stand to get your picture taken by one of Mount Washington Observatories Webcams to prove you’ve found one of the two Geocaches located at the summit.
If you want to find this one for yourself it can be found at N 44° 16.253 W 071° 18.198 – If I told you anymore it’d spoil all of the fun. Contrary to what the geocaching.comWeb site says the “X” is white and not yellow.
There’s a second Geocache on the Summit of Mount Washington located at N 44° 16.157 W 071° 18.143 as a memorial to the 9/11 tragedy. There are also four Benchmarks located at the Summit that you can look for – I’m going to leave it up to you to find the cordinates of those.If you have a hand held GPS or Smartphone with a built in GPS this can be a great way to spend a sunny day with the family.
