New Intern First Day
2010-05-13 16:29:05.000 – Rebecca Scholand, Summit Intern
To start, let me introduce myself, I am Rebecca and am one of the new summit interns. I started my first day on the summit yesterday with an uneventful drive on the Mount Washington Auto Road (according to others, if it takes less then an hour and you can see the valley below, it is not a “real” trip to the summit). Arriving at the observatory, I had trouble believing that this is where I would be spending my summer. The view I was presented with was hard to compare to anything else. Looking across the valley and to distant mountains was something I had looked forward to seeing in anticipation of this summer.
After settling in, I had the welcomed task of heading out to shovel snow. If there is one thing I miss most about going to school in Florida, it is the lack of snow to be shoveled. Later in the day, I had the opportunity to take a walk down the Auto Road with observer Mike Finnegan where he pointed out some of the peaks, ravines, and local geography while the visibility would allow. Despite knowing that the weather on my first day would not be an accurate representation of what I am to experience on a more normal basis, I welcomed the sun scattered sky, light winds, and comfortably brisk temperature as I watched my first sunset on the Rockpile.
