Entrance Into Extreme Mount Washington
After many days without seeing the sun in both our valley and summit locations, I am happy to report a visibility of 90 miles from the summit of Mount Washington this morning. With this window of ideal weather, a handful of valley staff took the opportunity to ascend the Mount Washington Auto Road to assist in the staging of materials ahead of our June 13th grand opening of Extreme Mount Washington . With a soft opening having already taken place on Memorial Day weekend, the summit museum space is now reclosed this week to ensure that all final installations are completed in a timely fashion.
Alongside the finishing touches to Extreme Mount Washington, our Education Department has been busy training a group of docents that will be responsible for delivering educational programs throughout the summer season. Much like our current volunteer program, these docents will live at the summit of Mount Washington for a week at a time, but will give daily programs based around certain exhibits housed in Extreme Mount Washington. Two such programs highlight our Rime Ice and Alpine Zone exhibits, giving participants a better appreciation for these two high-elevation features. Members of the public may sign up for these programs upon arrival at Extreme Mount Washington or by contacting our Education staff based at the Weather Discovery Center .
