Like many things, it’s all about the people. Such is the case with the Mount Washington Observatory staff and interns; our summit family for the week. And how impressive they all are! Not only are they highly skilled in their areas of expertise (meteorology, computer tech, atmospheric science, etc) they are interesting company, are thoughtful problem-solvers and have great sense of humors.
Living up here is a lot like living on an island. You’re partially cut off from the rest of the world and dependent upon each other. Others come to your ‘island’ in the form of summit tourists, museum visitors, summer hikers and backpackers. This week even saw hundreds of runners competing in the 50th running of the road race up the Mount Washington Auto Road. At the end of the day, they all leave and you’re back to your summit family on the ‘mountain island.’ Walks outdoors at sunrise or sunset are in an uncrowded world with only the current weather elements surrounding you: wind, fog, clouds moving in and out, spectacular views (if you’re lucky), and always the fresh alpine air.
As an Observatory volunteer, you are able to better understand the important work of the organization and contribute in your small way to make it work efficiently. We would like to thank our ‘island family; Steve, Stacey, Mike, Deb, interns – Kristen and Sabrina’ for a great week – full of making new friends and memories – we hope to be back!!
