The start of my week began with a different tone than that of a normal shift. The reason: the Red Sox are in the World Series! Red Sox nation is now in full swing. The dynamic duo of Big Papi and Manny Ramirez are hotter than ever right now, while Okajima and Papelbon are pitching lights out ball after the 7th inning. And with the dominating performance of Josh Beckett, who is now a ridiculous 4-0 with 35 strikeouts this postseason, and the finesse of Curt Schilling with his improved 11-2 record in the postseason, the Sox are now sitting on a 2-0 series lead going into Denver.
Now, I know some of you are worried about how Dice-K (Daisuke Matsuzaka) is going to do tonight, but to ease some of your concerns let me hit you with some knowledge about just how good he was during the regular season. This year, in his rookie season, he had 201 strikeouts during the regular season which was more than Josh Beckett and only seven other pitchers in the entire MLB had more K’s than Matsuzaka. With 204 2/3 innings pitched this works out to about an 8.8 strikeout rate per nine innings pitched, which was better than C.C Sabathia and Josh Beckett, both of whom are Cy Young award candidates this year. Finally, regular season hitters batted just .246 against him.
Of the previous 50 teams that took a 2-0 lead in the World Series, 39 went on to win, including six straight and the last 12 of 13. Now I realize that the mile high Coors field is like the Grand Canyon of baseball fields with its expansive outfield, but we can beat these guys on their home field. For those of you worried about balls flying out of there like it’s the Home Run Derby on top of Mount Washington, fear not. Baseballs are now kept in a humidor so they don’t dry out and become harder which would make it easier for players to hit home runs at an alarming rate. This was the case prior to 2002 before the humidor was introduced to the ballpark.
Game 3 starts at 8:00 pm EST the match up will be Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. Josh Fogg.
Observers in the past have been die hard Red Sox fans just like myself and I found the two attached images from 2004.
