Another Week at 6,288 feet!

2015-06-18 10:13:30.000 – Thailynn Munroe, Summit Intern

As my second shift week on the summit comes to a close, I can’t believe how fast the weeks go by. I feel like it was yesterday that I was up here in April for my final interview, when there was snow and ice everywhere and the wind chill was in the negative 30s. Each week I learn more about the summit and its history, as well as meet the most amazing and interesting people. This week, one of our volunteers was related to Bob Monahan, one of the original four observers who founded the Observatory in the 1930s. I hope someday to leave a legacy like that for myself, and as I look forward I am positive that this internship will be a milestone in achieving that goal. There are many problems that weigh on the shoulders of scientists in the natural sciences field, but if they are half as dedicated as the weather observers at Mount Washington, and if they have any margin of the support that this mountain sees then I am sure that we will be able to solve whatever problem lands in our laps.

On a different note, there are some exciting events coming up for Mount Washington if you haven’t already heard. Today is the second day of Ride to the Sky, where the Auto Road is closed to passenger vehicles and open solely for motorists! However, the cog railway and shuttle vans can still bring you to the summit if you do not own a motorcycle. This Sunday, bring your father up to spend a day in the clouds that he is sure to remember. If you are looking for a VIP experience at the mountain, be sure to become a member of the observatory and receive a tour detailing the work, weather, and life here at the observatory. Also, don’t forget about Seek the Peak, and check out the video of our shift getting in shape for the big hike!
