This morning, sitting on the edge of the parking lots, looking to the east anticipating sunrise, the weather on Mount Washington felt very normal. The type of autumn weather you might expect to wake up to in September while camping at Mollidgewock State Park in the Great North Woods of NH. Temperatures were cool, but certainly not cold, everything was wet, but not from rain, and winds were calm allowing mist to rise slowly off the landscape and evaporate into the air. It was pleasant, and not at all an experience I would have expected at the ‘Home of the World’s Worst Weather,’ and though the break was short lived, it was certainly appreciated during this stretch of gloom.
Back inside for the synoptic observation, I found that the weather was not only unusual, but record breaking (alright, tying). The temperature was 43 degree, what at 7AM was already the daily record high, set in 1935 and 1982. Temperatures have fallen back a bit now, but breaking the record remains in the realm of possibility later as well. We’ll keep you posted!
