On April 8, 2024, the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse, and certain parts of New Hampshire will be in the path of totality. There are numerous ways to experience this epic phenomenon with us leading up to and on eclipse day, including numerous distance learning opportunities geared toward the history and science of eclipses plus viewing tips, an exhibit of MWOBS astrophotography at the Omni Mount Washington Resort, a community science program in Pittsburg, NH in collaboration with Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse, and more. Here is a look at the excitement ahead. Join us! And don’t forget to enter to win a behind-the-scenes tour of our summit weather station (details below).

– NOW until April 8, 2024: Calling all educators! Sign your school up for our Understanding Weather and Climate of the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse educational program (in-person or virtual) through our Distance Learning page. Or email us at education@mountwashington.org.

– April 4, 2024 7:00-8:00 PM: Science in the Mountains, “Forecasting the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse.” Watch the recording HERE. You’ll hear from Shawn Laatsch, Director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center at the University of Maine, Orono and our own Francis Tarasiewicz, Weather Observer & Education Specialist.

– Thursday, April 4, 2024 until April 8, 2024: Tune into our Higher Summits Forecast website page for forecasting of the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse.

– Saturday, April 6, 2024 5:00-7:00 PM: Photography exhibition and reception featuring MWOBS Weather Observer and Meteorologist Ryan Knapp’s astrophotography. Location: Omni Mount Washington Resort Great Hall. (Open to public.)

– Sunday, April 7, 2024 11:00 AM-12:00 PM: Understanding Weather and Climate of the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse (And Viewing Tips) Educational Program with MWOBS educators. Location: Omni Mount Washington Resort Grand Ballroom. (Open to public.)

– Sunday, April 7, 2024 3:00-4:00 PM: Eclipse Science and Surprising Misconceptions about Our Solar System with Dr. Neil F. Comins, Professor of Physics at the University of Maine. Location: Omni Mount Washington Resort Grand Ballroom. (Open to public.)

– Monday, April 8, 2024 12:00-5:00 PM: 2024 Total Solar Eclipse family friendly viewing party with MWOBS educators. Location: The Lodges at Coleman State Park. (THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.)

– Monday, April 8, 2024 (12:00-5:00 PM): 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Citizen CATE. Location: Pittsburgh Public School in Pittsburg, NH.

ENTER TO WIN!

On April 8, Mount Washington will NOT be in the total solar eclipse path of totality, but we WILL be measuring the change in temperature caused by incoming solar radiation at the summit. Be the first person to guess how temperature changes during the eclipse’s maximum, and you will win a behind-the-scenes tour of our summit weather station with our Executive Director, Drew Bush, as well as lunch with our scientists!

To enter, make a donation over $10 AT THIS LINK and write “eclipse competition” in the notes field (under Additional Details). The first two numbers of your donation amount should be equal to the whole number and tenths place of your guess (i.e., $72 means a guess of 7.2 degrees Celsius). Need help? Check out this peer reviewed article from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A on atmospheric changes from solar eclipses. All donations support our 91-year legacy of scientific research and education.
