Storm Streaks…
As shift change day rapidly approaches, my stay on the summit as volunteer draws toa close. While I was here I was fortunate enough to experience the summit’s manymoods. Who could believe that during a single week in late June one couldexperience snow, rain, rime and glaze icing events, warm days with 100 mile views -suitable for alpine hiking, and of course, the summit’s signature hurricane forcewinds which are best experienced outside on the Obs Deck! I personally enjoyedbeing outside as the summit plunged in and out of the cumulus clouds that streakedand rolled over the top of the mountain.
Yesterday, all eyes were fixed on the weather room windows as a potentialthunderstorm approached the summit. For a few brief moments the setting sunilluminated the gossamer streaks of ‘virga’ descending from the rain clouds. Thissent everyone scurrying for any camera within arms length. Although we managed toget some great photos, we never witnessed any lightning.
Despite that very tiny disappointment, it has been a fantastic week. The observersand interns are terrific and dedicated bunch. Nin is the perfect lap cat and looksgreat in his new vest. Bottom line: This is an amazing place and Dick (the ‘dessertman’ co-volunteer), as well as myself have been grateful for the opportunity to spendtime on the summit and help out. I couldn’t think of a better place to spend abirthday! (Lynn and Cathy did a great job assembling the dual chocolate pies when Iwasn’t looking.)
