The first EduTrippers of the season

The EduTrippers made it to the Summit around 11:30 this morning after several stops along the Auto Road to do a little sightseeing and picture taking for an overnight at the Observatory with Trip Leader Dave McDonald who’s the Directory of Education at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, NH. The topic of this EduTrip is Studying Stars from the Summit.

One of the comments I heard was “We went from late fall to early winter on the trip up”. For sure early winter has arrived at the Summit with about two inches of snow, rime and ice on the ground with a few deeper drifts. Today also saw a couple of train loads of guests coming up on the Cog to visit the Summit and experience a bit of winter’s chilly winds. We also saw a few well prepared hikers make their way to the Summit today as well.

Another sure sign that winter is upon us at the Summit is when Marty heads up stairs when you go to do an Weather Observation on the deck and you open the door and he just looks out then quickly heads back downstairs.

If you too would like to experience a day or even an overnight at the Summit of Mount Washington check out this year’s EduTrips. Topics range from Photography, Winter Mountaineering Essentials to High Altitude Medicine and of course Weather related topics.
