spring

4:15 am EST rolls around and I roll (or hop, seeing how I’m on the top bunk) out of bed. It is the beginning of a new week, Kyle is back from his vacation, and I’m back on days for the week. All reasons to be happy and joyful. However, upon waking, I must admit to some crankiness. We were in and out of the clouds, temperatures were around four degrees above zero (a warm start to this week compared to our last week on the summit) and winds were blowing at close to 80 mph. A beautiful morning on the summit, but still I was cranky. That is until approximately 5:15 am EST this morning: sunrise. The best part of waking up is not Folgers in your cup, but a warming helping of sunrise! With clouds just brushing the top of the summit, and occasionally obstructing our view, the sun peeped over the eastern mountains a brilliant red orange, reflecting a pink hued light off the ice tipped mountain tops.
The base of the cloud deck now hovers just above us, in cotton ball formations, making it feel like it is time for Spring Time Oreos (with the golden crème). Sunshine beams down on the summit, eliminating the small amount of rime that formed on the deck in the wee hours of the morning, and putting smiles on the faces of those who have ventured outside. It almost smells like spring time! That could have something to do with the storm system approaching from the southwest. From my short time here, I’ve noticed that winter storms come from three general areas: up the eastern seaboard, from Canada, and from the Great Lakes. This southwest storm has a different feel to it. This feels like spring.
