As we head into December, it is a perfect time to look back and summarize November. If I were to use adjectives to summarize November 2024’s weather conditions on the summit, they would be – warm, wet, foggy, windy, and snowy. To find out why these words were chosen, let’s look back at some of the stats for November 2024:

Our average temperature for November 2024 was 25.9°F (-3.4°C), which is 5.1°F above the 1991-2020 30-year normal for our station. The November 2024 average temperature of 25.9°F (-3.4°C) is our dataset’s 9th warmest November average temperature, which started in 1932. Our warmest temperature recorded in November 2024 was 48°F (9°C), which occurred on November 1st, 5th, and 6th. Our coldest temperature recorded in November 2024 was 7°F (-14°C), which occurred on November 30.

In terms of total liquid-equivalent precipitation (which reflects the liquid collected from rain and by melting the freezing and frozen precipitation types collected after measuring their depth) during November 2024, the summit of Mount Washington received 9.01 inches, which was 0.92 inches above the 1991-2020 30-year normal for our location. The summit received 39.8 inches of sleet/snow, which was 4.2 inches above our location’s 1991-2020 30-year normal.

A few people have inquired about how our snowfall has been going so far. For Mount Washington, our snowfall season goes from July 1, 2024, until June 30, 2025, so our season is in its early development. Looking at the numbers from July 1, 2024, to November 30, 2024, the summit has received 69.2 inches of sleet/snow, which is 13.3 inches above the 1991-2020 30-year normal for our location.

In terms of winds, for November 2024, our average was 46.4 mph, which was 7.0 mph above the 1991-2020 30-year normal for our location. The November 2024 average of 46.4 mph is our dataset’s 10th highest November average wind, starting in 1932. Our highest gust recorded for November 2024 was a NW gust of 121 mph, which occurred on November 24. November 2024 had 20 days with gusts of 73 mph or greater; of those days, 7 days had 100 mph or greater gusts.

As for our weather during November 2024, we averaged 30% of the possible sunshine. The summit had 4 days noted as clear or mostly clear, and there were 6 partly sunny days, with the remaining 20 days being filed under mostly cloudy, cloudy, or obscured (fog). We had 27 days with at least some amount of fog recorded during a 24-hour period. We had 11 days with rain/freezing rain and 17 days with sleet/snow.
